The state’s largest teachers union has endorsed state Sen. Spencer Coggs for lieutenant governor, potentially giving the Milwaukee Democrat’s campaign a significant boost.
The union praised Coggs in a statement for his work as chair of the Senate Labor, Elections and Urban Affairs Committee as well as his support of union causes and work authoring legislation to make 5-year-old kindergarten mandatory. Coggs also was a leading critic of a proposal to grant the mayor control over Milwaukee Public Schools, an idea adamantly opposed by the union.
Coggs finished a distant third to Madison businessman Henry Sanders and Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson in the WisPolitics straw poll at the Democratic state convention in mid-June. Some election-watchers had started to view the race as a two-person contest between Nelson and Sanders.
