Let your passion lead you

Jacqueline Herd-Barber is the immediate past chair of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, serves on the Black Arts Think Tank, and sits on several boards, including the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, SaintA, and the MSOE Corporation Board. She earned a 2015 Fellowship Open Community Leader Award for her efforts to invest in the lives of Milwaukee youth. She worked for 25 years as a sales engineer for Motorola before retiring in 2009.
“My joy comes from my ability to make an impact in my passion areas: children, education, and the underserved. More than 30 years ago, I had the opportunity to join The Milwaukee Urban League Guild and became involved with several community programs that focused on our young people, our families, and our broader community needs. The seed was planted and, from there, I’ve grown my support of organizations that share those passions. Now, retirement has allowed me to make an even greater impact as a volunteer.
“Through the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, I participate in the Milwaukee Succeeds initiative, which strives to put the educational needs of our children and young adults first. All children are capable, deserving the best we can provide. We work together to improve their chances of achieving their dreams and being successful in school and life – from cradle to career. Through Black Arts Think Tank, we are consolidating three African-American performing arts groups onto one platform to ensure their long-term sustainability, health and success, so our community can enjoy the benefits of the performing arts for generations to come.
“My advice: Become involved. Find your passion and let it lead you to community service. Matching your interests and talents with the needs of an organization that aims to make a difference will ensure that both sides enjoy the benefits of your gifts, and that your time and effort will make a lasting impact on the lives of others.”
