What was the smartest thing your company did in the past year?

“We remain active in a number of market segments, so when one slows down, we can focus our attention on the others – allowing us to flex as the market changes. For example, we introduced the new ER POST Structural System to meet both LEED and economic building needs in the Midwest. Our machinery division has been focusing on construction growth in other parts of the world through the sale of our trademarked Spancrete hollowcore machines. We are currently working with Habitat for Humanity and developing a solution for disaster relief efforts in the Gulf States.”

What’s new at your company?

“We have taken the initiative to produce a precast concrete truss building system which saves tremendous time and money in the construction process.  Considering the current economic situation, this new system fits perfectly with today’s construction practices.  We have also educated a number of employees as LEED accredited professionals and have spent the last two years developing our skills and experience to assist general contractors in the latest computer modeling practices.”

Do you plan to hire any additional staff or make any significant capital investments in your company in the next year?

“We are always looking for the best of the best at Spancrete. Given the shift in the construction market, we need to be very thoughtful and strategic in all capital investments and hiring practices.”

What will be your company’s main challenges in the next year?

“Maintaining growth and focus in this slowing economy.”

What’s the hottest trend in your industry?

“Precast is an ideal building product for sustainability and LEED, so that has kept us busy. We have been the market leader in the combination of Architectural Precast and Structural Precast as one building element. This combination building component has solved a number of construction market needs. Also, BIM or computer modeling is being used in many of our projects.”

Do you have a business mantra?

“For over 60 years, quality/service/ durability has been our foundation.”

From a business standpoint, who do you look up to?

“My father … he was the greatest man I’ve ever known.”

What was the best advice you ever received?

“Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Stand behind your word and product. Be fair.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

“I enjoy spending time traveling and boating with my family.”
