The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) in Milwaukee confirmed today it is in talks with Countryside Humane Society regarding a potential acquisition of the Racine-based shelter, but nothing has yet been finalized.
“We have been approached by leaders in Racine about a possible acquisition of Countryside Humane Society, and we are excited about the potential to help animals in that community,” said Anne Reed, executive director at WHS. “At this time, however, all our conversations are still preliminary and it is not certain that an acquisition will happen at all. There are still many factors to consider – including animal control contracts with the local municipalities – and we are taking this one step at a time. We will be sure to keep both the Milwaukee and Racine communities abreast of any developments.”
The Wisconsin Humane Society is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee and Saukville.
The Countryside Humane Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 that provides animal control, adoption and other community services for Racine County residents, and cares for approximately 5,000 lost, abandoned, and surrendered animals each year.
