Fusion Babbitting to expand

Fusion Babbitting Co. Inc. plans to add 18,000 square feet to its Milwaukee facility by expanding its space to include the building next door.
Fusion, 4540 W. Burnham, currently has 22,000 square feet at its rotating equipment repair business, said John Povlich, owner. The addition of 4530 W. Burnham, previously occupied by Product Service and Manufacturing, includes three bays with five- to 10-ton crane capacity.
The company specializes in rebuilding fluid film bearings, or Babbitt line bearings, which stabilize the high-speed shaft in a large pump, electric motor or gear box, Povlich said. Babbitt is an alloy that is centrifugally cast into a steel or cast iron bearing to increase its strength.
Fusion also manufactures new bearings if the existing ones can’t be repaired, which is about 10 percent of its business.
The expansion will allow for increased machining capacity, he said.
“We’ve been in business 22 years and we’re really cramped in the space that we have,” Povlich said.
Fusion has 36 employees, and plans to hire six to eight more in the first half of 2012, he said. The company hopes to expand its geographic territory as well.
“We’ve been steady through the recession because we turn out a good quality product and we’re taking more and more business from our competitors,” Povlich said.
