In 2007, a group of water industry, academic, and civic leaders convened to discuss the breadth and strength of the water cluster centered in Milwaukee. From these meetings, The Water Council emerged to leverage our resources and transform the region into a World Water hub. The Water Council is transforming a region by harnessing the power of an existing international industry cluster, linking a rapidly expanding academic research community and convening some of the nation’s brightest and most energetic professionals.
The only organization of its kind in the United States, The Water Council is driving Wisconsin’s water cluster by building cross-sector and global research and business partnerships, developing programs to train our talent, and solving the ever-increasing challenges within the international water space.
Winner of the inaugural Growing Blue Award from Global Water Intelligence in 2012.
The award is given to individuals, organizations, or government entities that advance public understanding of water’s essential role in economic and social growth as well as its importance to sustainable environmental strategies.

Recognized as a center for freshwater expertise, in 2009 The Water Council became a member of the UN Global Compact Cities Programme – 14 global cities focused on unique sustainability issues.
