City of Milwaukee officials say they want to rename Pittsburgh Avenue in Walker’s Point.
The Milwaukee Water Council’s Global Water Center will be located at 223 W. Pittsburgh Ave. City officials want to showcase Milwaukee as a global hub of water technology, so they don’t want the address of the Global Water Center to draw attention to another city.
The street will also be extended into the Reed Street Yards, where city officials are trying to help establish a water technology business park.
“With all due respect to the City of Pittsburgh, I’m hoping we will find a different name that matches the vision of this neighborhood,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
City officials are asking residents to make suggestions and have established a web site (www.milwaukee.gov/nameastreet) to collect suggestions.
“We are counting on some great street name suggestions to match the great ambitions for (the Global Water Center) and this neighborhood,” Barrett said.
A construction launch event was held Monday to celebrate the start of construction of the Global Water Center, which will be created in a redeveloped 98,000-square-foot, seven-story warehouse building.
