Affordable housing development planned for south side warehouse

Sherman Associates plans to renovate the former Milwaukee Paper Box Company building at 1560 W. Pierce St., Milwaukee, into a 70- to 75-unit affordable housing development. The apartments will have 1-3 bedrooms.

“The emphasis will be on developing more of the three bedroom units to support the workforce families in the area in need of housing,” Sherman Associates said in documents filed with the city. “the units are being developed to largely address workforce housing, however a mix of units will be set aside as market rate apartments.”

Sherman Associates is seeking historic preservation tax credits and tax credits from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) to help finance the project.

The 5-story, 112,800-square-foot building was constructed in 1935 according to city records.

“From the upper floor of this building there are some fabulous views of the Menomonee Valley, Clark Square and even lake views that are breathtaking,” Sherman Associates said in its city filing.

The development plans also include exterior surface parking and indoor parking on the lower level of the building.
