YMCA hosting free diabetes health screening today

In recognition of today being American Diabetes Association Alert Day, the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee is hosting a free health screening from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Parklawn YMCA, 4340 N. 46th St., Milwaukee.

More than 240,000 Milwaukee County residents are at high risk for developing diabetes, representing 40 percent of the county’s population. Milwaukee County’s average risk is 14 percent higher than the Wisconsin state average, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

“Diabetes Alert Day is the perfect time to not only determine our own risk, but also encourage our family and friends to test their risk of developing the disease,” said Ellie Duyser, healthy living director at the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee. “Studies show that people with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by making simple lifestyle changes that include eating healthier and increasing physical activity.”
