Stocks end year on high note

The U.S. stock market sprinted to the finish of a record year, trading higher on the last morning of 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 57 points this morning, rising to 16,562 following yesterday’s 52nd record close of the year.

The S&P 500 was up 6 points to 1,847, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 18 points to 4,172.

For the year, the S&P gained 29.3 percent, the biggest yearly leap it has made since 1997. The Dow Jones was up about 26 percent for the year and the Nasdaq was up almost 38 percent, the most since 2009.

Renewed confidence among investors and optimism among businesses and consumers for the coming year contributed to the strong finish.

The largest local gainers this morning were Koss Corp., up 24 cents to $5.15, and Orion Energy Systems Inc., up 10 cents to $6.84.
