Ride free

Scott Bucher, president and owner of Milwaukee-based Traction Factory, started riding motorcycles while he was in college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. What started out as his primary mode of transportation as a college student has morphed into a getaway he can use to collect his thoughts and gain new friends.

“It’s totally relaxing. It’s a fantastic way to collect yourself because in order to ride and ride well you have to concentrate on what you are doing,” he said “It gives me an opportunity to ‘park’ the other thoughts in my head of things that I do daily.”

Bucher has more than 42,000 miles on his customized 200 Harley-Davidson FLHT and enjoys riding long distances. He has gone round trip from Milwaukee to Seattle, Wash., Montana and Colorado. His wife, Natalie and his brother Todd have accompanied him on a few of the trips, but he has also gained a few additional friends on some of the Iron Butt rides and Wisconsin governor’s rides he has done.

“It’s a really great experience,” Bucher said. “I’ve gained some life-long friends along the way. On the road together, whether you are a business owner, a heart surgeon or a mechanic it becomes less about what you do professionally and more about the shared experience and what you are doing in the moment.”

According to Bucher, there is a leveling of the playing field that allows riders to get to know people on a level unlike any other. Those connections are particularly interesting for Bucher.

“In terms of what we do as a business these rides offer a different perspective and study of human dynamic,” he said. “The people on the rides range in age, personal and professional backgrounds, they have different interests and for me it’s interesting to study the interaction between the different groups. The human dynamic and the effective communication between members can translate well into what I do daily in business. I enjoy that aspect as well.”
