Real Estate Blog: Architect says it’s Walker’s Point, not “Fifth Ward”

I received an interesting email yesterday from Ursula Twombly, co-founder and principal of Continuum Architects + Planners in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood.

She was commenting on my Real Estate Spotlight column about development in Walker’s Point, which appeared in the latest issue of the BizTimes Milwaukee magazine.

Here’s what she had to say: “Great article about the real estate developments in Walker’s Point – it is exciting to be part of it and helping to make it happen. I also would like to thank you for not using the ‘Fifth Ward’ designation any longer. We are working hard at rebranding the area as just Walker’s Point. Our firm has been on S. 1st (Street) since 1996 and we have seen some tremendous changes.”

I’m not sure about the history of the Fifth Ward name. I’ve heard the Walker’s Point neighborhood was once in the city’s Fifth Ward. The city today is now divided up into aldermanic districts, not wards.

Prior to the Great Recession a lot of developers were using the Fifth Ward name for the neighborhood, in what appeared to some to be an attempt to take advantage of the popularity of the thriving Third Ward and use a similar name instead of Walker’s Point.

But if Twombly is right, the people in the neighborhood prefer the Walker’s Point name.
