R.A. Smith & Associates, a civil engineering, surveying and technical services consultancy based Brookfield, has been named "2002 Waukesha County Business of the Year" in an annual program presented by Waukesha County Executive Daniel Finley.
Company president Richard A. Smith thanked his employees as he accepted the award during a packed luncheon at the Country Inn. "R.A. Smith’s success stems from its people and values," Smith said.
The firm, one of Wisconsin’s largest civil engineering companies, was also recently honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). That group on Sept. 20 presented two awards to R.A. Smith & Associates. An individual merit award was presented to Richard Smith for his contribution to the consulting engineering industry. The ASCE also presented an engineering achievement award for R.A. Smith’s design of the State Highway 59 Waukesha south bypass in the city of Waukesha. The project utilized first-of-its-kind design techniques and saved significant taxpayer dollars. It is the third award R.A. Smith has received for the project.
Smith said, "The recognition R.A. Smith & Associates has achieved can be attributed to the three business principles upon which this firm was founded: stability, quality and innovation." He told the Country Inn audience that the firm’s revenues have doubled in the past five years.
R.A. Smith & Associates has earned several awards since its founding in 1978, including recognition in fall 2001 by Milwaukee Magazine and MRA as a top employer in the magazine’s "Best Places to Work" survey. R.A. Smith was the only engineering firm named in the survey.
The company provides civil engineering services including municipal engineering, wastewater collection and treatment, water supply and distribution, stormwater management, transportation design and construction services; land surveying; and technical services consulting including geographic information systems (GIS), three-dimensional animation and visualization production, information technology consulting and grants and legislation services.
The firm’s National Survey & Engineering division’s surveying practice is the largest in Wisconsin.
R.A. Smith (www.rasmith.com), with 197 employees, has a branch office in Oshkosh.
Joining Finley in presenting the Waukesha County award was Bill Mitchell of the Waukesha County Economic Development Corp.
Also honored during the ceremony were La Casa de Esperanza as the non-profit agency of the year and the Pewaukee Fire Department as the governmental agency of the year.
