  • Sunday, Jan. 16 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration will be held at the Marcus Center, 929 N. Water St., from 1 to 4 p.m. Major Robert Thomson, Salvation Army Divisional Commander for Wisconsin & Upper Michigan, will give the invocation.  Salvation Army volunteers will also be on hand serving free hot chocolate to guests.  The event is free to attend
  • Monday, Jan. 17 City Year Milwaukee volunteers will honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jrand unite 250 local residents and community members in service from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. City Year Milwaukee’s 60 young adults are leading the service day. More than 250 volunteers alongside City Year staff and corps members will unite to paint murals, beautify classrooms and create a positive learning environment at South Division High School, 1515 W. Lapham Blvd., where City Year corps members serve full-time to help close the education achievement gap by working with at-risk children during the school year.

  • Monday, Jan. 17 Admission Possible Milwaukee will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy and the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Junior Day by joining the nationwide day of service. The Admission Possible Milwaukee Team will serve by packing food boxes for a volunteer-run, nonprofit food buying club from 8:30a.m. to 12 p.m. To learn more about the nationwide call to service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day visit http://www.serve.gov/mlkday.asp.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 9 The Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha will host it’s 18th annual Youth of the Year Awards Dinner at Madrigrano Marina Shores, 302 S. 58th St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  The club will announce the 2011 Youth of the year as well as honor Larry and Linda Rasch with the Mary Frost-Ashley Patron Saint Award; and Mcternan Wireless/Mobile One with the Boys & Girls Club of America Helping Hands Award.   • Monday, Feb. 14 Beauty hair salon will offer haircuts and blowouts to participating clients from 12 to 5 p.m. at its eastside location, 1633 N. Farwell Ave. All of the proceeds from the days events will benefit the women of St. Catherine’s. In addition to these services, Beauty is also hosting a clothing drive which will be open to the public. Top stylists in the salon are donating their time and talent for the effort.
