National Baking Co. acquires Melody Cookies

Milwaukee-based National Baking Co. Inc. has acquired Oak Creek-based Melody Cookies Inc.

The transaction price was not disclosed.

National Baking Co., which has about 44 employees, operates as National Bakery & Deli, which has retail locations in Milwaukee, Brookfield and Greendale.

The acquisition will allow National to expand its offerings and increase production, particularly in the wholesale cookie niche. There will be some product crossover between the companies, but they will operate as complementary business units.

Melody Cookies has about 10 employees. Judy and Milt Baggenstoss, who have owned Melody since 1988, will assist with the transition and then retire. Their son, Mark Baggenstoss, will continue as operations manager, and the rest of Melody’s employees will also stay with National Baking, said Bryant Krauss, co-owner of National Baking.

“We’re actually hoping to increase production and add a second shift over there as we get into the company more and more, and what we’re really hoping to do is have a second shift running continuously with the first shift,” Krauss said. “Our hope is that within the next month, we can start moving production up to a higher level.”

National Baking has a 6,000-square-foot production facility at 3200 S. 16th St. in Milwaukee. It will retain Melody’s 15,250-square-foot production facility at 7195 S. First St. in Oak Creek. The company will rent it from the current owner, with an option to buy it down the road, Krauss said.

“I want the company to be as good for National Baking Co. as it was for us all of these years,” Milt Baggenstoss said.
