Meijer store planned for Waukesha

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer Inc. plans to build a 192,940-square-foot store and a 2,509-square-foot gas station on a 29-acre site southeast of Sunset Drive and Tenny Avenue in Waukesha. Meijer stores include large grocery departments and general merchandise.

The Waukesha Plan Commission will review the project during its meeting today.

Meijer plans to make a major entry into the southeastern Wisconsin retail market. In addition to the plans for the Waukesha store, the company is also working on plans for stores in Wauwatosa, Sussex, Grafton, Oak Creek and Kenosha. The company also acquired a 580,000-square-foot distribution center in Pleasant Prairie from Supervalu Inc. and plans to build a 253,677-square-foot addition on to the building. Meijer will use the facility as a distribution hub for its stores in southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois.
