Margaret Faut Callahan, Ph.D., will cap her tenure as dean of Marquette University’s College of Nursing in August to move to Loyola University Chicago, where she will become provost for the school’s health science division.

Faut Callahan, who has served Marquette for seven years, has also been interim provost of the university for the past two years. The announcement of her leave falls as Marquette’s new permanent provost, Daniel Myers, Ph.D., takes over today.

In a press release issued by Marquette on Monday, university president Michael Lovell, Ph.D., credited Faut Callahan for taking the College of Nursing to “a new level of excellence.”

Among the dean’s top accomplishments during her leadership was the successful reaccreditation of the college by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. She also grew the college’s freshman class by 77 percent and rolled out Wisconsin’s first Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

Other noteworthy achievements of hers include the completion of the College of Nursing’s fundraising campaign to back the $4 million, 10,000-square-foot Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Center for Clinical Simulation and a stronger partnership with the Zablocki VA Medical Center. With the medical center, Faut Callahan helped secure $5 million in funding for a Veterans Administration Nursing Academy Partnership, which allowed for a bigger freshman class and more engagement with the medical center.

“The past seven years at Marquette have been such a gift for me, and I’m truly thankful for the colleagues and students I got to interact with and learn from every day,” Faut Callahan said. “Serving as provost of Loyola University Chicago’s growing health science division will combine my love for health science teaching, practice, research and administration with my passion for Catholic, Jesuit higher education. But it was the opportunity to return home to my undergraduate alma mater, which is right down the street from my family’s home in Oak Brook, Illinois, that made this role a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I could not pass up.”

Faut Callahan will conclude her time at Marquette on Aug. 31. The Jesuit institution plans to appoint an interim dean for the College of Nursing before the start of the fall semester.
