The 11th annual Milwaukee Awards for Neighborhood Development Innovation (MANDIs) were recently presented at an event at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee.
The Harley-Davidson Foundation received the Vision Award for its far-reaching and prolific commitment, financial and otherwise, to the neighborhoods surrounding the Harley-Davidson headquarters.
J. Allen Stokes, Executive Vice President of Inner City Redevelopment Corporation, received the Northern Trust Navigator Award. Stokes provides leadership to a coalition of nonprofits working together in a targeted area of the Harambee Community on Milwaukee’s north side, which to date, has leveraged over $15 million in new investments, including over 70 units of new housing since 2007.
The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee received the PNC Trail Blazer Award for its education initiative, a pilot education program that helps kids in public housing stay in school through mentoring, afterschool programs, tutoring, grade monitoring and family commitment Layton Boulevard West Neighbors received the Harris Bank Cornerstone Award. The organization works at the grassroots level to engage neighbors and improve the quality of life in one of Milwaukee’s most densely populated and diverse neighborhoods on the south side.
The David Schulz Aquatic Center, 1301 West Hampton Avenue, developed by the Milwaukee County Parks Department, received the State Farm Insurance “Building Blocks Award” Large Project award. It is a newly developed aquatic center on the north side of Milwaukee.
Washington Park Apartments, 3940 W. Lisbon Ave., Milwaukee, developed by the United Methodist Children’s Service, received the State Farm Insurance “Building Blocks Award” Small Project award. The newly developed 24 unit apartment complex has 10,000 square feet of community space and provides affordable housing as well as a range of services to the families living in the neighborhood.
