Kanavas out of Senate race, but Johnson is about to get in

Learn more about:

Brookfield Republican Ted Kanavas is taking a pass on a bid for the U.S. Senate, while Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson is poised to get into the race.
Kanavas said he does not think he can raise $5 million over the next six months, which he thinks would be essential to build his name ID and give him a chance in the GOP primary and general election fight against U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Middleton.
Meanwhile, GOP sources tell WisPolitics that Johnson has decided to enter the race. But he’ll likely wait to make an announcement for another week or two as he tries to build up his campaign first.
Asked for comment, Johnson responded in an e-mail, "I will only say that there will be an important announcement regarding my intentions within the next two weeks."
He would join Terrence Wall, Dick Leinenkugal and David Westlake as Republican candidates.
