A successful social media campaign spearheaded by Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine initiative enabled the company to donate a $20,000 grant to Milwaukee’s Sojourner Family Center.

HopeLine exists as a philanthropic extension of Verizon with a focus on fighting domestic violence. The initiative donates funds and used wireless phones and accessories to victims of abuse, complementing Sojourner Family Center’s mission to help victims of family violence find safety and forge a new direction.

HopeLine’s social media campaign generated funds through the hashtag #VoicesHavePower. Every time a social media user posted a hopeful message incorporating the hashtag, Verizon donated $3 toward domestic violence prevention and awareness programs and efforts. The campaign, which kicked off last summer, tallied more than 118,000 messages among individuals and organizations across the country.

Funds are benefiting multiple organizations whose focus areas fall in line with those of Sojourner Family Center.

“Verizon’s ‘Because Voices Have Power’ campaign was a powerful effort,” Carmen Pitre, executive director of Sojourner, said in an announcement.

“This campaign in particular gave support, courage and hope to those who have been impacted by domestic violence – reminding them that they matter and that they have the power to make positive changes for themselves and their families,” she said.

“Together, we have an opportunity to lead and take a stand against domestic violence,” said Andrea Meyer, public relations manager for Verizon Wireless’ Illinois and Wisconsin region. “With the #VoicesHavePower campaign and the power of social media, Milwaukeeans truly raised their voices to support Sojourner Family Peace Center and all those they serve.”

The $20,000 grant given to Sojourner Family Center will primarily support the organization’s education and training programs relating to self-efficacy and financial stability.
