Froedtert Hospital was recently named the first hospital to win the Volunteer Center of Milwaukee’s “Inspire by Example” business award.

The Froedtert Hospital Community Service Program is a two-year-old program that connects Froedtert staff members with community organizations that need volunteer help.

Program activities in the past have included staffing free health clinics, completing home repairs for the elderly, working on a Habitat for Humanity home, providing health screenings at health fairs and serving as literacy tutors.

In 2008 the service program put together a team to assist Literacy Services of Wisconsin. The team spent 169 hours tutoring adults in reading and writing, English as a second language and General Educational Development (GED) preparation.

“Because of the overwhelmingly positive response from staff and beneficiary organizations, the service program has been successful well beyond what was imagined by the small group of visionary leaders who championed the idea,” said Carla Washington, community partnerships manager for Froedtert Hospital.

The hospital joins past business winners such as Johnson Controls Inc., Manpower Inc., Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., Kohl’s Department Stores and Metavante.
