Five-alarm fire burns building on north side

A five-alarm fire is burning in a vacant two-story commercial building on Milwaukee’s north side near 12th and Vliet streets.

The building houses a lot of combustible material, Milwaukee Deputy Fire Chief Randy Zingler told WISN-Channel 12, a media partner of BizTimes.
The Milwaukee Fire Department told it has notified the City Department of Neighborhood Services that it expects the building to collapse and will not allow anyone to go inside.
The heavy smoke from the fire is billowing across Interstate 43 near the Marquette Interchange and Highway 145. Traffic appeared to be moving, but the smoke is heavy.
The fire started at about 8 a.m. at the building near the Coggs Center and the Repairers of the Breach.
Because of the high winds today, firefighters are trying to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings.
Channel 12 reported that 120 firefighters have responded to the scene, and one has suffered minor injuries.
