Executive Warriors

Organizations:

A group of about a dozen business executives from the Milwaukee area recently competed in the five-kilometer Warrior Dash, which features a dozen “military-style” obstacles, in Twin Lakes.

Ryan Schultz, principal at Town of Brookfield-based HSI Properties LLC, was one of the participants, and part of the group of executives that regularly exercises at the Milwaukee Athletic Club over the lunch hour.

“We’re all in a plyo-metrics class that meets over the noon hour,” he said. “We all range in age and athletic ability, but we all have a lot of fun and we decided doing this race would be great.”

Schultz has done other 5K races in the past, but nothing like the Warrior Dash, he said.

“It presented a unique challenge for us,” he said. “But the challenge and the camaraderie of friends and colleagues kept us all going, I think.”

Aside from their regular workouts, the group didn’t train much for the obstacles, Schultz said.

“We didn’t really train outside of what we normally do during our noon hour class,” he said, “But it certainly helped us. I think we were all a bit surprised at how quickly we were able to navigate our way through the course.”

Schultz finished the course in approximately 28 minutes at 1,702 out of approximately 10,000 runners.

“Doing something like this is a constant reminder that you shouldn’t take yourself too seriously,” Schultz said. “It’s a great balance for life between work and family. It’s an outlet and part of it is fun recreation, but it’s also about staying mentally and physically fit.”

Schultz plans to do a Warrior Dash race again in the future, and this time, hopes the group from the Milwaukee Athletic Club will be even larger.
