What was the smartest thing your company did in the past year?
“We replaced older trucks and equipment and began a long-term Internet marketing campaign.”

What’s new at your company?
“When you have been in business for 57 years, what is sometimes new is replacing what is old. As an excavating company, replacing and upgrading backhoe earthmoving machines is crucial. State-of-the-art equipment allows us to operate faster with a greater degree of safety. As we have a number of dump trucks, we recognize that replacing them at predetermined mileages lessens our repair costs. All of our power tools are regularly checked for wear and replaced as necessary. Newer tools, trucks and equipment are good business.”

Do you plan to hire any additional staff or make any significant capital investments in your company in the next year?
“Yes, we are investing in new phone systems, replacing some equipment, adding five new employees, and investing in a new website and Internet marketing.”

What will be your company’s main challenges in the next year?
“Taking advantage of communication technology. The technology exists and is exciting, but integrating it into daily operations and getting everybody on board is certainly going to be a challenge.”

What’s the hottest trend in your industry?
“Various alternatives to structural wall reinforcement, such as carbon fiber straps, are an interesting trend as they allow a flush to the wall alternative to structural steel tubing. They have been time tested, and as the quality of adhesives has increased so has this repair’s viability.”

Do you have a business mantra?
“Pride, Quality, Service. As McCoy is a trusted name we believe that ‘repairs that last’ is an important internal mantra of ours. Nobody wants to repair their foundation, and they certainly do not want to do it twice. Our customers demand that their repairs last the test of time, and for 57 years we have not let them down.”

How would you sum up your company’s culture?
“Treat each other with respect. We understand that people have families that are more important than work. We have 20 employees who I have been honored to work with for over 15 years. Those many years together transcend a work definition and go instead straight to the family category. In a business culture, normally there’s quite a bit of turnover and focus on business and returns. In our business – when you have a culture built on longevity – it transcends return on investments and return on business, and it turns into caring for each other like a family. And through the years, through the ups and downs, you stick with each other through all those ups and downs.”

What role does social responsibility play in your company culture?
“Successful companies understand that communities and organizations need our support to continue their good works. We certainly support the MACC Fund as much as we can.”

How have you managed to stay in business for almost 60 years?
“There’s a little bit of luck involved, I suppose, and a lot of hard work. The success of long-term business is customer care, and in our business it’s providing repairs that last. Reputation in our industry is everything.”

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you in your career?
“I was asked to speak at a luncheon and was running late. I went into the wrong room in my rush. I sat at the head table only to realize it was the wrong luncheon! I was applauded nonetheless. That was pretty funny.”
