Waterford, Mich.-based sporting goods store chain Dunham’s Athleisure Corp. plans to open a store in the former Jewel-Osco building at 6525 S. 27th St. in Franklin.

The Dunham’s store will occupy 39,000 square feet of space in the 62,000-square-foot building, said John Kuhn, senior vice president for Siegel-Gallagher. Kuhn brokered the deal for Dunham’s and the landlord, Bry-Franklin LLC.

Dunham’s has about 160 locations in 12 Midwest and Northeast states. Other Dunham’s locations in southeastern Wisconsin are located in Cudahy, West Allis, Brookfield, Milwaukee, Delavan and Sheboygan.

The building has been vacant since the Jewel-Osco store closed a few years ago, Kuhn said. Bry-Franklin LLC has renamed the building Franklin Town Center.

A fitness center is close to leasing the remaining 23,000 square feet of space in the building, Kuhn said. It appears the fitness center is Planet Fitness, which will be reviewed by the Franklin Plan Commission on Thursday. Planet Fitness has been active seeking additional locations in southeastern Wisconsin.

Franklin Town Center is located on the west side of South 27th Street between Home Depot and Walmart stores.

“It’s obviously a very strong retail corridor with very good demographics,” Kuhn said. ‘It has easy access to I-94 and good visibility from South 27th Street.”
