U.S. job growth accelerated in October, with the private sector adding a seasonally adjusted 171,000 jobs, exceeding most expectations, but the stubborn unemployment rate ticked one-tenth of a percentage point higher to 7.9 percent, as more people resumed looking for work.

The United Way of Greater Milwaukee's Executive Committee voted to make an immediate $25,000 grant to the American Red Cross in Southeastern Wisconsin, funding which will help the organization deploy volunteers to the East Coast to help in the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
