U.S. employers picked up their pace of hiring in March, a sign that suggests a winter slowdown was only temporary.

U.S. businesses added 191,000 jobs in March, returning to the level of job growth seen in December before bad winter weather hit the economy, payrolls firm ADP said today.

Verizon Wireless has announced it will hire 23 full-time employees in Wisconsin by the end of June. Seven of the positions will be in southeastern Wisconsin.

Meijer Inc. said it plans to hire 100 employees to work at the regional distribution center that it will open this summer in Pleasant Prairie. Eventually there will be more than 300 employees working there.

February unemployment rates fell in most states, including Wisconsin, and two-thirds of the states reported job gains.

While the number of women-owned businesses has grown by 68 percent nationally since 1997, Wisconsin has lagged behind with just 36.6 percent growth, according to the recent American Express OPEN State the of Women-Owned Businesses Report.
