Building at Kral Scrap Metal in Big Bend damaged by fire

The main building at Kral Scrap Metal Inc. at W224 S8575 Industrial Drive in Big Bend was damaged by a fire Sunday night.

The Big Bend Fire Department responded to the blaze at 8:25 p.m.

“Upon arrival, fire had already broken through the roof and the building became fully involved,” the Big Bend Fire Department said on its Facebook page.

Several other fire departments from Waukesha, Racine and Walworth counties also responded to the fire.

“We forced entry into the building and the fire was knocked down,” the Big Bend Fire Department said on its Facebook page. “Some propane tanks did (explode) within the building causing area residents to hear loud booms from the fire.”

No one was in the building at the time of the fire. State fire investigators will be on scene investigating the cause of the fire, the Big Bend Fire Department said.

The fire damaged one of three buildings on the Kral Scrap Metal property.

The company continues to serve its industrial customers and will reopen to the public for walk-in customers on Wednesday, July 13, said Michael Kral, president and owner.

“Sadly our business suffered a devastating fire last night to our main building,” Kral Scrap Metal said on its Facebook page. “The thoughtful comments from our customers and the community were/are uplifting during a difficult time. We are working on getting back to business as usual to serve our customers…We appreciate your patience as we navigate through this obstacle and hope you continue to choose our family-owned small business to serve your recycling needs.”
