State Sen. Robert Jauch, D-Poplar, has asked Gov. Scott Walker to create an eight-member, bipartisan panel of legislators to seek a solution to the impasse over legislation that would streamline the state’s mine permitting process.
Jauch helped lead the fight to defeat a GOP version of the legislation that he said compromised environmental protections. He was joined by state Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, the lone Republican to vote against the bill, which went down to defeat in the state Senate two weeks ago. As a result, Gogebic Taconite withdrew its plans to seek permits for a $1.5 billion iron mine in northern Wisconsin. For more, read today’s edition of the BizTimes Morning Headlines.
