Union officials on Wednesday blasted Piggly Wiggly Midwest’s plans to close its south-side Sheboygan store, calling it a “despicable” move aimed at “retaliating” against union employees and evading a recent court order that found the company had violated federal labor laws.

The comments were made in a written statement released by John Eiden, president of the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1473, which represents about 100 or so of the store’s workers. “(The company’s owner) is now retaliating by closing the store and putting the workers on the street,” Eiden wrote.
