MiKE

ArtPlace America, a national alliance of foundations, banks and federal agencies supporting art, has awarded a $350,000 grant to the Greater Milwaukee Committee’s Innovation in Milwaukee (MiKE) Initiative dubbed “Creational Trails.” The community-minded art program, selected as one of 54 grant recipients from more than 1,200 project submissions, will install interactive artworks at the Artery (an abandoned rail line between Milwaukee’s Riverwest and Harambee neighborhoods) as well as in a 10-block stretch along West Wisconsin Avenue. Organizers aim to draw more foot and bike traffic to these areas through the art installations and promote public safety within the city. The art will be temporary but will highlight the potential of each space for long-term economic development. Additional operational support for “Creational Trails” will be provided by Art Milwaukee, Beintween, Riverworks Development Corp., the City of Milwaukee and the West Wisconsin Avenue Task Force. MiKE will hold a public information meeting about the project on July 15 at OPEN MiKE in The Shops of Grand Avenue, located downtown.
