A project to add exterior lights to the Basilica of St. Josaphat, a major Milwaukee landmark located at 2333 S. Sixth St. on the city’s south side, is beginning this week.
Led by the St. Josaphat Basilicat Foundation, the $230,000 project will add 103 LED lights to illuminate the bell tower and portico of the building. The foundation has raised most of the funds for the project, spokesman Dustin Vrab said.
Later, the foundation hopes to raise an additional $500,000 to light up the Basilica’s dome.
“Right now at night the Basilica just sits there dark,” Vrab said.
The building has some exterior lighting, but these projects would dramatically improve that, Vrab said. The foundation hopes the project will beautify the building and improve safety in the neighborhood, he said.
The initial lighting project for the bell tower and portico are expected to be complete by mid-October.
