The increase brought Aurora’s total number of employees up to 32,720 as of Aug. 29.

Aurora has hired around 3,900 new employees since Jan. 1, Rislov said, with the vast majority filling positions that opened up due to natural turnover. But around 1,500 new positions have been created over the past year.

“As patient volumes adjust we have to adjust our staffing to that volume, that’s the majority of the hiring that occurs,” Rislov said. “However there are some areas where Aurora is making investments in our future. Part of that is the Wisconsin Collaborative Insurance Company, work around population management, and also innovation.”

The Wisconsin Collaborative Insurance Company is a joint-venture insurance company that Aurora launched in partnership with Blue Cross & Blue Shield in Wisconsin this spring that sells commercial insurance to medium- and large-sized employer groups.

Rislov could not say how many of the new positions were created as a result of forming the insurance company.

The positions that were created for the purpose of “innovation” were added to examine Aurora’s strategies and practices in terms of health care delivery and explore new models.

“We’ll continue to adjust to volumes like we have in the past,” Rislov said. “From a workforce perspective, we’re really trying to focus on finding amazing people to care for our communities.”
