Advancements in Health Care: Dr. Madan Kandula, Advanced Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists (ADVENT)

Dr. Madan Kandula, a board certified otolaryngologist, has been a leader in offering state-of-the-art technologies and surgery in Wisconsin.

Kandula founded Advanced Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists (ADVENT) in 2004 with his wife and audiologist Dr. Gwen Kandula. ADVENT is based in Wauwatosa and has several locations in southeastern Wisconsin.

“I liked the people in the field, they were the most genuine and on target to the doctor I wanted to be,” said Kandula.

In 2006, Kandula became the first surgeon in the state of Wisconsin to perform balloon sinuplasty. The surgery uses an endoscopic, catheter-based system for patients suffering from sinusitis.

Kandula has also performed other minimally invasive techniques and technologies in his practice. In 2007, Kandula became the first Wisconsin surgeon to implant a drug delivery device called the stratus spacer directly into the sinuses.

“Five years, even 10 years ago there was one set of things to do for the average sinus sufferer and nowadays there are different ways to go about things. It is the neatest to apply whatever is out there,” said Kandula.

In 2008, Kandula was able to partner with a local compounding pharmacy to deliver medications directly into the sinuses themselves. That year he was the first surgeon in the state to perform FinESS, which is used to expand the natural sinus openings by going through the sinuses themselves.

“FinESS is in general a minimally invasive sinus surgery. With that, I can perform on patients while they are awake,” said Kandula.

ADVENT also uses the only MiniCAT CT scanner in southeastern Wisconsin. The MiniCAT uses 10 percent of the radiation of a typical CT scanner.

Kandula also has implemented a paperless system in his office which allows ePerscriction and medical records access through ADVENT’s online portal. Kandula’s system allows for instant access to patient files and scans with a click on his tablet PC.

“The best part of my day is to use every bit of my knowledge and bring the knowledge from elsewhere to give to my patients. It provides an arsenal of specialties,” said Kandula.

Kandula has been praised for his services and exceptional patient care.

“His best trait is his commitment to solve the problem instead of putting a Band-Aid on it,” said Jodi Patterson, a patient.

“I had seen numerous ENTs and suffered for over 20 years of my life and you begin to get discouraged,” said patient Mike Diemer, who nominated Kandula for a Health Care Hero Award. “Now it is unbelievable that I feel this good after Dr. Kandula.”
