A brewer and a vintner

Steve Voss, mortgage loan officer at Brookfield-based North Shore Bank, picked up his first set of wine and beer making equipment at an estate sale 10 years ago.

Voss regularly makes wine and home brew for his family and friends.

“Lately it has been a lot more wine and less beer,” he said. “Wine takes more patience and beer takes more time.”

Voss has made strawberry wine, pear wine and even grows his own currants to use in his recipes.

Voss uses recipes for some wines, but also experiments with his own concoctions for both beer and wine. He’s even dabbled with merlot and cabernet recipes, though admits they require a bit more finesse than he has time for right now.

“You can find or create a recipe for pretty much any type of wine or beer you want to try to make,” Voss said. “It’s fun. I love wine and beer and I really like creating things. There is something really gratifying about being able to throw a party and share things to eat or drink that you’ve created.”

Voss and his wife, Stephanie also hunt for wild mushrooms on occasion and make their own cheeses, he said.

“I have a few years before retirement, but I can’t wait to have more time to devote to my hobbies,” Voss said.
