Eight Milwaukee area organizations are receiving grants totaling $200,000 through the Kohlโs Healthy Families program โ a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Kohlโs โto support nutrition-focused projects.
Menomonee Falls-based Kohlโs Corp. recently committed $1 million to the American Cancer Society to launch new pilot programs that increase awareness of healthy food choices in clinic, school and faith-based settings, and improve access to cancer screenings and treatment in the Milwaukee area.
Recipients of the funding include:
- Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers
- Cross Lutheran Church in Milwaukee
- Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center
- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukeeโs College of Nursing
- Walnut Way Conservation Corp.
- Groundwork Milwaukee, Inc.
- Southeast Asian Educational Development of Wisconsin, Inc.
- Muslim Community & Health Center
The initiatives include cooking classes, gardening lessons and field trips to local farmers, among others. The goal is to help participants learn where they can access healthy foods in their community.
The American Cancer Society hopes to reach nearly 3,000 individuals through the projects.
โWhere we live, work, learn, and play has a major influence on what we eat and our ability to be physically active,โ said Laurie Bertrand, executive director of the American Cancer Society in Wisconsin. โWeโre excited about partnering with these organizations and furthering their efforts to help Milwaukee families make healthy food choices and access healthy foods.โ
Kohlโs has committed $11 million to the ACS since 2010 for the Kohlโs Healthy Families program.
