What has fueled your company’s growth? “Shorehaven’s growth is due to very stable leadership, diverse ‘product lines,’ strong compliance with regulations, and continuous improvement of our skills. Leadership has a growth-seeking vision: We serve a larger purpose, to impact lives through effective, ethical treatment and lifelong staff learning.”

What is the biggest obstacle to your company’s growth? “Reimbursement rates, the most challenging issue is pricing. In our industry, the payers, not the sellers, control pricing. So the value of our reimbursement goes down every year – 42 percent of the value we received in 1989.”

Do you plan any changes in your company in the upcoming months? “We plan quite a few changes. We are looking closely at expanding our outpatient clinic to Racine, Appleton, and Milwaukee, plus expanding our Brown Deer office. We are implementing a new program so that everyone calling Shorehaven for services can receive an initial evaluation within a day or two so we can determine the best person to help and the types of help which may be needed, then set those up. We are also working on an innovative new pilot program with a primary medical practice to identify and provide early intervention for at-risk children.”

Who are the business people, locally or nationally, whom you admire? And what traits do those people exhibit that make you admire them? “A couple of ideas we like sound cliché, but are very important. One idea is that the company which does not look for new business is planning to go out of business. Another is that the failure to plan is a plan for failure.”

What is the outlook for the business conditions of your industry over the next several months? “Due to the Supreme Court upholding ACA and the passage of parity legislation, business should stay robust.”

What is your company’s key strategy for rising out of the recession? “Shorehaven is not in a recession. We have grown steadily for 10 consecutive years and through this recession period by staying with the same principles and leadership which brought us continuous growth. While many competitors shy away from working with consumers on Badgercare, we are a company which tries to provide exceptional service to Badgercare consumers, with an eye towards helping the overall system save money because consumers receive great mental health service, which lowers the overall cost of medical care.”
