WPC Technologies receives grant for move

WPC Technologies Inc. has received a $432,000 Brownfield Grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. for remediation costs associated with moving into a new headquarters in Oak Creek.

The 75,000-square-foot building, located at 7350 S. Sixth St., and the 4.7-acre site are blighted and contaminated. Direct contact risk levels and enforcement standards have been exceeded, according to the WEDC.
Grant funds will be used to remediate a railroad off-loading area, perform dike environmental clean-up, seal floors to avoid vapor migration, remove an above ground storage tank, complete an environmental clean sweep and assess soil, vapor and groundwater.
The total cost of the remediation will be $821,000. WPC will cover the costs of building rehabilitation and land acquisition, for a total of $5.6 million.
“We’ve been part of the Milwaukee (metro area) for awhile and actually improving a site is of interest to us,” said Bob Kruse, WPC executive vice president. “We don’t like to see those buildings empty and sitting there as an eyesore to the community for a long period of time.”
WPC Technologies, formerly known as Wayne Pigment Corp., makes anti-corrosive pigments used to coat metal and wood products. It is currently located in three multiple-story buildings totaling about 100,000-square-feet at 300 S. Barclay St. in Milwaukee.
But some of the current space is wasted because of the layout, Kruse said. The new single-story facility will allow room for growth, including about seven new jobs, for a total of 36 employees.
“Associated with this move is the ability to expand our ability to produce,” he said. “We are in the wood category right now and looking to continue to expand into that category” and into other markets.
