Tesla Motors Inc. is opening a sales and service center in Highland Park, Ill., taking aim at affluent customers accustomed to paying soaring prices for fancy automobiles.
The electric car manufacturer leased 16,500 square feet at 1200 Old Skokie Valley Road in the northern suburb, where it will be surrounded by Porsche, Cadillac, Audi and Lexus dealerships.
With those kinds of neighbors, Tesla should feel right at home. The Model S sedan, for example, starts at $62,400, not including state and federal subsidies, which lower the price.
The new location will be the fourth in the Chicago area for Palo Alto, Calif.-based Tesla, whose CEO is PayPal Inc. co-founder Elon Musk.
