Sumitomo Electric hopes to expand

Sumitomo Electric Carbide Manufacturing Inc. has applied to the City of New Berlin for permits to expand its facility there.

According to the application, Sumitomo plans to nearly double its existing facility at 5635 S. Westridge Drive by adding 44,000 square feet at the 6-acre site. The project would also include an additional 114 parking spaces, bringing the total to 214.
SCM, the division of Mount Prospect, Ill-based Sumitomo that is located in New Berlin, was established when the company acquired America’s Cutting Tools in Muskego in 1991. The existing facility was built in 1996. SCM manufactures steel, cast iron and exotic materials cutting tool solutions.
There are currently 130 employees on three production shifts at SCM, and the company plans to add another 100 employees by 2017, according to the application.
Anderson-Ashton Inc. in New Berlin is serving as general contractor on the project.
The New Berlin Plan Commission is set to review Sumitomo’s application at its April 2 meeting.
