“We place tremendous value on our customers and co-workers and we are proud of our long association in southeastern Wisconsin and the greater Milwaukee community,” said Stein CEO Mark Birmingham. “We want to thank our dedicated customers and colleagues for their many years of support. This decision was reached after careful thought and after considering the challenges that come with operating multiple stores in such close proximity. The consolidation will allow us to put our financial resources into new initiatives that will help us better serve our customers while maximizing our business performance.”

The initiatives include the opening of new, temporary “Just Plants” locations to test new markets, an expanded selection of seasonal merchandise for gifts and home decorations and the addition of new landscape design services.

In 2011, Stein opened five “Just Plants” locations in Cedarburg, Muskego, Oak Creek, Pewaukee and Waukesha, and the company expects to open 10 pop-up stores in 2012, including additional Milwaukee locations.

In addition, Stein is looking at the potential to add retail stores in the Madison area, as well as locations in northern Illinois, and expects to add staff as operations expand over the next few years.

Founded in 1946, Stein Gardens & Gifts is the largest independent garden center in the Midwest.
