A grand opening celebration is being held today at Southridge Mall in Greendale with events occuring throughout the day at the mall to celebrate the opening of the new Macy’s department store in the former Younker’s store space at the south end of the mall. The addition of the two-floor, 150,000-square-foot Macy’s store is part of a multi-million dollar renovation of the 42-year-old, 1.2 million-square-foot mall, which is owned by Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc.
Macy’s said it would to hire 160 people to work at the Southridge store.
The addition of the Macy’s store is expected to boost the mall and the South 76th Street retail corridor. The Southridge Macy’s store will be the retailer’s second location in the metro Milwaukee area. The other is at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa.
“I think (the Southridge Macy’s store) is going to draw a lot more traffic to that area,” said Peter Glaser, first vice president of CBRE’s Milwaukee office. “That’s going to keep a lot of the south side shoppers (shopping) on the south side. And it will help lease up other spaces in that area.”
