Italy-based Seda International Packaging Group plans to expand its operations in Mt. Pleasant.

The company purchased a 323,000-square-foot building at 12501 Globe Dr. in 2010 from HSA Commercial Real Estate, which had built the building on speculation.

Seda has 63 employees at the building and primarily makes paper coffee cups for McDonald’s in Canada.

A significant amount of the building is currently unused by Seda, said Logan Martin, community development coordinator for Mt. Pleasant.

The company is planning a $3 million expansion that will increase the amount of space it is using in the building and will create an additional 31 jobs, Martin said.

In addition, Seda purchased 18.6 acres to the south of its building for future expansion, Martin said.

The village received a $155,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation to cover half of the cost of planned improvements to the intersection of Highway 20 and County Highway V/International Drive. The village plans to install traffic signals and left-turn lanes at the intersection, to improve safety and access to the Seda facility.
