Office building approved for 27th and Wisconsin

Klein Development, owned by developer Joe Klein, plans to build a 64,000-square-foot office building on the long-vacant block southeast of North 27th Street and Wisconsin Avenue in the city’s Avenues West neighborhood.

The building will be occupied by the state Department of Children and Families. The state agency will relocate and consolidate its Milwaukee operations for a few other locations into this building.

The plans for the $10.4 million project were approved Tuesday by the Milwaukee Common Council. Korb Tredo Architects is doing the design work for the project. Milwaukee-based KBS Construction will build the building.

The building will be located along Wisconsin Avenue. A 200-space surface parking lot will be located south of the building.

Klein is buying the property from the city of Milwaukee Redevelopment Authority for $1. The site has been vacant for years. It was once occupied by an 11-story building that was a Hilton Hotel, later a Holiday Inn Hotel and later a Marquette University dormitory.

“I think it’s going to clean up that corner nicely,” said Dennis Klein, chairman of KBS Construction and the father of Joe Klein. “I think it’s a great project.”

Construction will likely begin in late summer and will take about 11 months to complete, Dennis Klein said.
