Northwestern Mutual unveils “Optimism Barometer”

As a follow-up to “The American Reality Study” which looked for insight of how Americans are handling the economic, political and social changes taking place, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. recently created “The Optimism Barometer”.

The barometer is an online tool that allows individuals an opportunity to see how they compare to the rest of the nation in terms of optimism. It also lets the company check in on the public’s perception of economic and social conditions.

The barometer asks users six questions, which helps determine their optimism score. The score is then compared to the rest of the U.S. population.

“The American Reality Study showed us that people appear to be simultaneously maintaining a positive outlook while also addressing some very real challenges head-on,” said Greg Oberland, executive vice president at Northwestern Mutual. “For example, while many people are feeling financially unstable, they’re planning to save more, and are placing a greater priority on achieving financial security for the future.

“It will be interesting to see how – or if – the optimism needle moves in the weeks, months and years ahead.”
