Salvation Army coordinator receives volunteer award
Salvation Army Volunteer coordinator Joy Alexander recently received the Wisconsin Volunteers Coordinators Association Award for outstanding performance in the areas of volunteer leadership, management and recruiting. The Wisconsin Volunteers Coordinators association is designed to serve as a positive force in the promotion of volunteerism, leadership and volunteer management. Alexander has been the volunteer coordinator with The Salvation Army for more than 5 years.  She manages nearly 4,000 volunteers annually and guides them to the appropriate program that suits their interests and training.

UCC celebrates leadership and service
The United Community Center recently held it’s 41st Anniversary Celebration and recognized Rogelio Cabral, vice president of sales at Catholoic Financial Life as the inaugural winner of it’s Future Leaders Award; and Dora Acosta, dean of students at Bruce-Guadalupe Middle School as the winner of its Passionate Service Award. The United Community Center also named the recipients of this year’s Friends of the Hispanic Community Awards, which recognize individuals that have made immeasurable contributions to the development and well-being of the community at large. This year’s award recipients included: Patricia Cadorin, senior vice president at Marshall & Ilsley Corporation; John Daniels Jr., chairman of Quarles & Brady LLP; Cecelia Gore, executive director of the Brewers Community Foundation; Bobbi Marsells, assistant secretary of the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee; and  Daniel McKeithan Jr., president of  Tamarack Petroleum Company.
The Center and Badger Mutual Insurance Company acknowledged achievements of the community’s youth by selecting five individuals for the Badger Mutual Wall of Fame. This year’s winners included Jazmine Rose Alicea, eight grader at Bruce Guadalupe Community School; Shirley Flores, senior at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School; German Gomez eighth grader at Bruce-Guadalupe Community School; Isis Lozano, freshman at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Rafael Rodriguez Jr. freshman at Brookfield Academy.

Community Shares adds member to board of directors
Community Shares of Greater Milwaukee has added Darien Winston to its Board of Directors.  Winston is program coordinator at the Milwaukee L.G.B.T. Community Center, managing HIV/STI education programs for youth.
Prior to becoming a program coordinator, Winston was a peer youth advisor for three years at the L.G.B.T. Community Center where he led monthly educational pieces and counseled youth.  He also spent time at the center as a Youth Development Specialist, hosting educational pieces about healthy living, Alcohol, Drugs, HIV Awareness, and other issues.
