NML to vacate East Building in October

Organizations:

In October, 600 Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. employees will vacate the East Building on its downtown Milwaukee corporate headquarters campus.

The employees will be moved into a 158,000-square-foot office building at 733 N. Van Buren St., located across the street from its headquarters campus. The company purchased that building in January and is renovating it.

“It will become an important and long-term part of our downtown campus,” said Northwestern Mutual spokesman John Gardner.

Mortenson Construction was the general contractor for the project and Eppstein Uhen was the architect.

By the end of the year demolition work is expected to begin for the 16-story, 452,000-square-foot East Building, which will be replaced by a 33-story, 1.1-million-square-foot office building. Construction for the new building is expected to begin next year.

“We’re still on a timeline to announce the new building design before the end of the year,” said Gardner.
