Next Door opens new school

Learn more about:

More than 400 preschool students entered the 2014-’15 school year at Next Door Foundation, Inc.’s new school, Next Door-Capitol, located at 5310 W. Capitol Drive in Milwaukee.

Next Door, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit early childhood education center, opened the classroom doors at its new school on Sept. 2, according to an announcement by the center.

Next Door purchased the site last year, after a decade of vacancy. The 103,000-square-foot building was previously home to Northwestern General Hospital.

Thanks to the additional space, Next Door is able to expand its Head Start programming with new preschool classrooms.

The Head Start program, which Next Door has been offering since 1993, is a federally-funded initiative that supports low-income children with early education, nutrition, health and parent involvement services.

Next Door completed the first stage of building renovations this past spring, which included outfitting the school with a “kids’ kitchen” and an art and drama studio.

The organization, which serves another 700 kids at its other locations in Milwaukee, plans to celebrate the opening of its new school during a Sept. 18 event, when it will unveil plans for phase two of renovations.

During the event, “Get Ready to Celebrate,” the organization will also toast its 45th anniversary.
