New Big East conference officially unveiled

At a press conference in New York this morning, officials announced the members of the future of the Big East conference.

The conference will include Marquette University and several other current Big East members: DePaul University, Georgetown University, Providence College, Seton Hall University, St. John’s University and Villanova University. Three new members will be added to the Big East: Butler University, Creighton University and Xavier University.

Other members of the current Big East are joining other conferences or are joining with other universities to create a new conference.

“As we celebrate our men’s basketball team’s eighth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and No. 3 seed, we are excited to begin a new chapter for Marquette’s Intercollegiate Athletics program,” said Marquette University president the Rev. Scott R. Pilarz. “With the addition of Butler, Creighton and Xavier, we’re particularly excited about the prospects of engaging with our alumni and friends in Indianapolis, Omaha and Cincinnati in new ways. This new conference offers a tremendous opportunity for all 16 of Marquette’s athletic programs to compete against mission-driven and like-minded institutions.”
