Republican Scott Walker has used his role in reining in Milwaukee County pension costs as a positive talking point in his campaign. However, a new TV ad from Tom Barrett tries to sour that enthusiasm.
Walker took over the county exec job when Tom Ament was forced out amid the pension scandal. Walker says he turned the county’s finances around and can do the same for the state as governor.
But Barrett’s ad says both the city and county faced "a crisis to pay pension obligations." Under Barrett, the city "met the crisis head on, and Barrett used smart budget cuts to help solve the problem."
By contrast, the ad says, Walker borrowed $400 million and passed the pension debt on to subsequent generations. "So who do you trust?" the narrator says. "It’s Tom Barrett who’s a straight shooter with honest plans for Wisconsin."
